אשת הבאפלו הלבנה

ישנו סיפור מסורתי ילידי שמביא את סיפורה של אשת הבאפלו הלבנה.


לפני זמן רב, הייתה תקופה של רעב וצ'יף שבט הלקוטה שלח שני סיירים כדי לחפש מזון עבור השבט. בזמן שהגברים הצעירים הלכו את דרכם, הם ראו דמות אי שם במרחק וכשהם התקרבו, התגלתה בפניהם אישה צעירה ויפה בעלת עור לבן ובוהק כאור. היו לה שיער כהה ועיניים כהות. אחד הסיירים הרגיש תשוקה עזה לאישה, הוא ניגש אליה באומרו לסייר השני שינסה לתבוע אותה כרעיה עבורו. הסייר השני ראה בה משהו מעבר והזהיר אותו שהיא נראית אישה קדושה, ולעשות כל דבר שיכול להיות חילול הקודש עלול להיות חסר נימוס ואף מסוכן. הסייר הבור ביטל והתעלם מעצתו.

וכך יצא שהסייר הנבון צפה בסייר הבור מתקרב ומחבק את האישה וענן לבן עוטף את השניים. כשהענן נעלם, נותרו רק האישה המסתורית וערימת העצמות. . העצמות היו שרידי האיש. הסייר הנבון היה מבוהל וחש צורך לקוד קידה מתוך הערכה ויראה. האישה הקדושה הזמינה אותו קדימה, להתקרב אליה, היא אמרה לו ששום נזק לא יקרה לו, ומאחר והיא יכולה לראות את ליבו, ובליבו אין את המניעים שהיה לסייר הבור. כאשר האישה דיברה בשפת הלקוטה, הסייר הנבון נוכח לדעת כי היא אחת מאנשיו והתגלתה כדי להביא רפואה.

בשלב זה הסבירה האישה שהיא (מ wakȟáŋ-קדושה, בעלת כוחות רוחניים ועל-טבעיים). היא הסבירה כי אם יעשה כפי שהורתה לו, אנשיו יתחזקו שוב. הסייר הבטיח לעשות כדבריה, לחזור למחנה שלו, לגשת אל המועצה ולהכין סעודה לקראת הגעתה של האישה אליהם. היא לימדה את הלקוטה שבע טקסים מקודשים, הראשון שבהם היה טקס הסווט לודג' והעניקה להם את הčhaŋnúŋpa (הצ'נופה), המקטרת הטקסית המקודשת.
